I love finishing off the weekend with Downton Abbey at 9pm. This year is certainly moving right along with mystery, romance, and just about everything in this season.

In between working, I am reorganizing one entire room, closets, clothes, and redesigning it for more practical use. This has been a long time project but I am about to see the light! You Tube has certainly helped me in doing this large project.

The Nichols-Hardman House 1869---A Sampler in the Making!

 My creative mind never tires of ideas and places to go and homesteading in the mountains!  Alot of times, I don't have to go very far to find the absolutely stunning gems in the North Ga. mountains, valleys and hills.

I would like to share with you some pictures Mr. Darcy took this afternoon of the old Hardman House right here in Sautee-Nacoochee, Ga, very close to where we live in this beautiful mountain country we call home.  He drove by and stopped to take several pics of the gorgeous, absolutely stunning restoration of a home from the 1800's here. The house touring will start and open this week. He said he had to take the pics from the road. A couple of folks were there still working on the inside of it today.

 People from all over visit Helen, Georgia, the little town next to it all year long. 

The house was originally built in 1869-1873 by Captain James H. Nichols. Nichols actually served as a Colonel in the Confederate army, but was called, "Captain" by those who knew him well. The farm was sold in 1893 to Calvin Hunnicutt of Atlanta. He sold the farm to Dr. Lamartine G. Hardman in 1903. Hardman later served as Governor of Georgia 1927 - 1931.

Captain Nichols named Anna Ruby Falls after his daughter, Anna Ruby, which is a beautiful waterfall just a couple miles away. I think I have posted pics in the past of Anna Ruby Falls. 

The house has been in the process of restoration for several years so I'm excited when I drive by to see all the restorations in progress and almost to completion now.

The estate will be reopening this Thursday for tours. A lot of the furniture of Dr. Hardman still remains in the house.

This is the main house. Yup. Isn't it beyond beautiful? Would this not make a gorgeous sampler???????

 It was modeled architecturally in an Italianate style after Nichols' aunt's house in Milledgeville and he called it West End.  "An unusual feature of the porch is clustered columns. A scroll-saw railing encloses the porch. The arched entrance has double doors with sidelights carrying over in the form of a transom arched at the bottom and top".~~~ from Digital Library of Georgia.

This is a second house on the property.  Not sure right now, but we think it was a guest house or the home of the care taker of the property years ago.

These pics intrigue me for a future sampler design. I can feel the birth of a new design to work on right now! So, somewhere down the road..........in the future, know that I will be recreating my take on this beautiful house.

I hope you have enjoyed these pics that Mr Darcy made this afternoon and when this site opens, for an inside tour, if they allow pictures, I will for sure be taking some detailed pics for the blog. I never thought of myself as loving history in school so much but as I get older, I really enjoy seeing something old, restored and valued just as before. 

A sampler of the entire property front, or including the Indian mound across the road.....just ideas now....... I do know that the first picture with the detail of the house would make a gorgeous linen sampler. The red roof, the white house and the shutters.

Of course, when the leaves change their beautiful colors in just a couple of weeks, my heart will be happy soaking in the views here. 

There's always, always, always, things to do at the homestead here and with working full time as a practitioner, I've been quite the busy one. However, I'm still clicking my needles at night and weekends, along with reading some good books and taking one room at the time right now week by week, cleaning out and redesigning our home for the two of us. I'm still on track with my 2014 goal to simplify.

I love to stay busy in my life, especially when I'm so blessed with a loving husband, a continuing career in women's health as an NP, and the love of needlework, homesteading, designing, music, and reading. 

~~~~~~~ And all of this started with a dream in my heart at age 10 in Ridgecrest, North Carolina with my church youth group. I said a little prayer to God that He would let me live in the mountains
when I grow up..........because literally each Spring when we traveled there and then again to Gatlinburg, Tennessee in the Fall with the church group, my heart fell in love especially during the Fall. 

Being raised in South Ga at the time and really not thinking that life would slow down enough for me to have that dream come true, I pushed it away until one day. One day, I made the move. God didn't share with me all the things I would have to go through to get my dream of a loving, kind husband, and a home in the mountains, and working in nursing but I can say it was all worth it in the long run. I know He watches me.

 If you are reading this and you have had dreams and prayers, please know even though it seems the impossible, with God all things are possible. It's the timing that makes the difference. He showed me through circumstances, some very surreal, what His promises hold in His timing, not mine. It's so good to know He loves us all unconditionally without rejection and judgement. After all, we are sons and daughters of a King.

Just a little bright thought of my past creative spirit to a pattern I created back a couple or few years ago in August in memory of my son Aaron. I'm sad to say I haven't stitched this one but it's calling me to do so.

In August, it's always that last heat, the last flowers bloom from the Summer to make room for the beautiful Fall mums and other varieties more favorited for cool weather.

Although it's been posted before, I thought I would repost this year because it's one my favorite samplers that I have designed. Being small in nature, I should start on it and maybe I will now.

 Please use the colors in the design as they have special meaning in this sampler. You can choose any blues or golds/yellows.

I hope you have a great day! Today is nice and sunny and really not too humid for the past couple of days. I'm sure out in the sun, it's pretty warm, like August is usually, but we can sense the change, the ever-so-slight change towards Fall air at night.

 September is right around the corner with promises of new beginnings and opportunities for us all if we seek them.

A New Sampler and New Beginnings for Fall 2014

These past few weeks have gone by in a flash. I'm halting one area of work and have accepted an offer full-time in a medical practice that I'm excited about. During the past few weeks I've worked extremely hard in the area of home health, revisiting my years of home health from about 20 years ago. I learned alot, sweated alot, drove with my knee alot while answering the phone and managing cases with an office in the car, and frequented McDonald's dollar menu probably more than most!  I'm switching gears again as I have an excellent opportunity again as a women's health nurse practitioner and very excited to be back in the swing of things.

Thank you to all who have still hung out and followed my blog. I literally had to take a long break as I didn't have time really for any personal hobby time. I'm hoping this new position will put back the balance I need in my life back and also serve the community at my best.

Mr. Fox and I went to a farmer's market last weekend and had so much fun, enjoying  a Peach Festival. I wish I had photos but I don't :(

Anyways, I can share with you that all the kinds of peaches that were possible, were there!  We also had some homemade Peach ice cream and hot Peach pie. Along with some Jersey sweet peaches, I also got some fresh Romaine lettuce, carrots, lemons, sweet corn on the cob, honey, a loaf of cinnamon pecan bread, and squash. I already had so many tomatoes that kind folks had given me through the past 2 weeks and we have eaten our good share of tomato sandwiches. I LOVE fresh tomato sandwiches with lot of salt and pepper, mayonnaise (not the Miracle Whip stuff......yikes) and lettuce, and thick, peppered bacon.

I definitely will be back more frequently especially with the Fall coming up very soon. I can already feel it in the air at night here in the North Georgia mountains, the coolness, but still the days are warm.

With the coming of that little bitty nip at night in the air and visiting the farmer's market, I was inspired to design this little sampler for those getting out their Fall decor, or who would like to add a pillow keep/pinkeep to their kitchen wood bowl of ornies. There's just nothing like the smell of Apple Cider and to have a warm cup of it with your sweetheart in the cool Fall Days coming up soon. Apple Cider is definitely a staple at the Fox homestead during the Fall and Winter here.

  Here are a couple of photos from our yard/forest around the house with 2 beautiful deer that come around the house regularly. We have named the buck-------Buck.

We named the doe--------Buttercup.

We saw Buck when he had only a little bit of antlers a long time back and now they have grown so much and he is getting a little heavier now. He still has the velvet on his antlers. Thank you to my DH for the photos.

Buck's picture was not taken with a closeup lens. DH was actually out right there with him and then after a couple of pictures, he just walked off slowly. They really are quite comfortable around the house.

The cats just sit in the porch chairs and watch them, not even chasing or making anything of it. Amazing.

I'm glad to have a couple of weeks off between jobs to get some things done around the homestead and go visit my parents. 

Mr. Fox's mother had surgery this past week as well as my dad. Yup, all in the same week.

Thankfully, they are both doing well.

My inspiration for this sampler I designed is yellow butterflies and those green catepillars that I see every Summer. I love butterflies. Especially yellow ones. We have many out this time of year, soaring through the butterfly bushes and flittering around so we can see them through the windows or on the porch.

When I was a little girl, seems like Summers lasted longer than they do now. In actuality with school, we did get out earlier in the Spring and started back later in the Fall. Even though I loved the Summer time activities, I actually loved school more. My love for reading and writing persist to this day. I remember the best part of Summer was the reading book club at the library.

 As the years roll on, they get shorter and shorter especially if I fill up my life with too many "things" on my list.

Not only in Summer, but also any time of our lives in which we are going through times that seem to last forever and ever, the little catepillars can be a reminder that with time and patience they will become a beautiful butterfly one day.

As I get older, I seem to have more patience with things. I think it's because with time and many years of learning life lessons. I know the key to those long periods of wait are time and patience.

Introspection can really help me see the possibilities and set my perceptions to a positive direction, knowing that through those long periods, my patience is being sharpened for the next time and the next and the next. I am not perfect by any means  but I'm encouraged by a simple yellow butterfly to remember that with time and in the right time, beautiful things can happen. 

And I think yellow butterflies flying around are very beautiful!

Bottom line is, what we put our time and patience in, will yield something beautiful.

We may not be able to always see it, but we can always have hope. 

Summertime is shorter for me now. It flies by literally because the weather in the mountains is really not as hot as it was growing up in South Georgia as a child. However, I'm still reminded of situations in my life that keep trucking along at a catepillar pace sometimes but have been told many times to remember that with time and patience, things change for the better. 

I hope you like this little sampler and stitch it up for the Summer as a positive reminder when you pass it by in a special place in your home. We all need those positive reminders especially in this world of so much negative. 

For book lovers, you can stitch this one up on 40 count for a book mark for a special friend or a sweet pinkeep.

I picked up another WIP to try and finish. I don't even know why I got distracted from this one and went to another. I guess my creativity and interest in the sampler had diminished at the time.

Now, going through my stash I'm inspired to continue to work on it. I think I started this one about 5 years ago.

The chart pack states that the finished size of the sampler design is 8 and 1/2 in x 12 and 1/2 in.

 Just thought you would like to see what I'm up to in the stitching world!

Right now I have limited time for stitching as we are busy with finishing up remodeling. It's looking REALLY good; however, our backs and joints are pretty sore from it all. ;)

I will say..................it definitely helped me with my general goal for 2014 to simplify because I have cleaned out closets, bathrooms cabinets, and many other things and realized how much I had duplicates of and things that expired.

With that being said, it's looking a whole lot better and pics to come of the changes.

I didn't miss it. I was up until midnight but sleepily went off to bed, to awaken and find out, yup, she is in the hospital and I was almost finished with the model of a new sampler.

Just recently hearing that the baby is a boy, I will be working on a larger commemerative sampler design in some beautiful blues. I will work on this as I can as I want it to be a wonderful sampler in honor of a moment in history you can pass down to your children by needle and thread.

 

This sampler also can be useful for ANY pregnancy memory and month and year can be substituted to fit your special bundle of joy!

 

So, have a spot of tea and smile with me!

 

 

Suggestions for finishing include framing and putting a dark green ribbon (similar to the DMC colors in the design) loosely with a bow and through the scrolling of the frame.

When the sex of the baby is announced the mother can change the ribbon (or you) to pink or blue after finding out the gender whether during the pregnancy or at the birth. I think this is a fun  way to commemorate any baby's birth. 

 

Alternatively this sampler design can be made into a pincushion with a special old fabbie to back it and a couple of diaper pins and buttons to accessorize.

 

This frame I used was in my stash and bought at half prince at Hobby Lobby.

 

I stitched the model 2 over 2 on 32 ct Belfast linen Baby Lotion. It's a gorgeous extremely light pink. I'm not sure if this color is available any longer but simple white linen would be a great alternative.

 

The DMC colors will be included with your emailed pattern.

Sneak peak at Anticipation sampler

in honor of the big anticipation of the Royal Baby and will be for purchase when finished on Etsy or the Feathers in the Nest facebook page..........................................boy or girl?????? well, it will not be long until we find out but certainly this last week has been filled with anticipation if it's a boy or girl baby.

  This pretty little sampler can be stitched in other colors for your own decor, primmed with coffee or walnut stain, or whatever to your liking. I like the colors as is for any nursery or baby gift.

This is a reproduction of an antique design that I've had for quite a while and was found in an antique store.  The colors are similar but not the same.. I added the hearts and the date for the baby's birth month.

 

 

I have always treasured this find! I hope you will like the sampler remake too.

 

 

 

Speaking of sweet, it was our 8th month anniversary yesterday, so by tradition every 20th of the month, I make a dessert. This is a Maple Sour Cream pound cake with hot cream cheese icing and cinnamon on top.

 

It is YUMMY!

The Love Month

Hey sweet readers, the week has traveled fast in this spot on the map here in North Ga! February is upon us and I always think of the love month because of Valentine's Day; however, really, I know that we should show our love daily for we never know when time is up for us. So every day is Valentine's day for me. I especially am extremely blessed to have Mr. Darcy as my husband because God couldn't have put two people together as well as He did us.

It's quite refreshing to have a partner, a lover, a friend, someone that holds the key to my heart, just daily doing his best, guiding and leading in this homestead. I can't say I've ever had this kind of pure love ever in my life.

The sweet Valentine's I stitched a couple of years ago, and coffee stained are at the top and second below, from Primitve Betty's blogspot and the third on bottom, The Sampler Girl, Tanya.

My kids are also part of my heart and will be forever.

For my little bittie Valentine knitted cover booklet of smalls, I started thinking of redwork. An empty heart frame as well.

Model stitching Downton Abbey: the Family sampler

As I passed the color crayons and paint in a tray yesterday at a store, I remembered the days of color and painting~~ coloring anything I could as a child.

 

My mind then reverted to a big sigh and change of colors for Downton Abbey sampler I designed recently. The core family is honored in it. Mr. Darcy and I LOVE the story and are big fans of the majestic, British series. Finally, in the midst of moving stitching supplies from one room to a new sewing room, I fell in love with new colors I forgot I had which led to possible color changes once again, for the sampler.

 

I knew the general colors I wanted for each of the spot motif parts of this sampler but tweaking it using sampler threads instead of non-varigated threads, made my heart skip quite a leap.

 

 

Yesterday, on a road trip to visit family, I was able to stitch only a small portion on this 32 count Oyster linen. There is just something about riding in a car on bumpy roads and trying to stab with a number 26 needle, the right linen thread count. Honestly, I realize then, some bumps in the road I didn't know existed. But even though all the bumps in the road almost threw me off track, I managed to start a beautiful sampler. Life is that way sometimes. Just roll the bumps of the road and remember the focus is one stitch day at a time.

 

So today as it's raining and cloudy, gloomy outside really, I came to final decisions in the dining room (not the sewing room---sigh) with a cup of tea. Of course a cup of tea solves many issues.

I could imagine having a cup of tea with Lady Mary or Edith would be quite interesting for a brief moment of reprieval from the gray day. I then opened  my eyes back to designing and here are the final selections.

 

It's really fun and exciting, almost as much as birthing a baby (well, ok, skip the pain part) to put together the colors of something I designed. To see it through to the finish is an exciting time.

I'm in this part right now and its hard not to put all other things aside and stitch, stitch, stitch until it is completed.

 

Mr. Darcy himself will be framing this piece with his handsome, creative hands! This is also exciting to work on something together and see it through, both of us. I hope you will bear with me through the process of birthing this sampler! I also have a few irons in the fire for some smaller designs inspired by Downton.

 

This week's episode was quite the shock that Edith was left at the alter. Sometimes, though, we just dont know when initially traumatic events are really directing us to a better path and I think this will be so for Edith. She was so hurt, as anyone would be in front of a crowd of people to be left. I so wished that he was honest with her at least the night before but some people don't do honesty and those that do in the perimeter can't even fathom dishonest hearts. I hope better things are in store for Edith though. She seems to be a good-hearted soul.

Can I just linger here a month or two until I get this done? I love colors. I love sampler thread colors.

 

If there was a Sampler Thread Anonymous Group (STAG), I probably would qualify to attend. But this will be a process of time with intermissions. 

 

  With my assistant, Abbie (no pun intended), who is warming my spot at the computer, and closing her eyes with a mantra of "heat my treat".

 

Yup. the girl loves her homemade dog treats but not cold from the frig. She will not eat it.

 

BUT, if I microwave it until it's just a tad bit warm, she eats it.

 

There's much to be said about spoiling a certain dog. In fact, she is probably thinking the name Abbey is really Abbie for her. Honestly, the girl is a character.

 

Ok, back to basics, like what's for dinner?

What's the New Year Bringing

Well, the New Year came swiftly and schedules are back on track. I've so much to clean up and organize that it's not funny. There have been some really cold mornings in these mountains this week and even though the sun is shining brightly today, rain is headed our way tonight and tomorrow.

 

Mr. Darcy had a good birthday and at least I did get his scarf made in time. We had a couple of nights where we toasted marshmellows in the fireplace stove and YUMMY, I tell you. Yummy.

 

The wood burning stove is keeping the homestead quite warm and toasty and the hum of the blower frequently woos me to sleep early on these long cold nights.

 

I'm ready for some SNOW! Seriously. Ready to make a snowman or two and snow angels! I do hope we get some this year. The thermals are ready!

 

I critiqued the Downton Abbey sampler so much until I had to just stop and say, ENOUGH! LOL

I was going to use the Sullivan threads but now have changed directions with overdyeds which I will have to order. I decided the overdyed sampler threads would look SO much better as this sampler is quite large.

This is the first printing of Downton Abbey~~~the Family sampler. This copy will go to Jolene as part of the Christmas Giveaway. I really enjoyed working on this for hours and hours and I'm sure this is the first of many smaller of ones I am working on now for DA.

This is the general finished look. I have yet to model stitch this one but I am going to start THIS weekend. Promise. The size finishes to 10 x 15. I  added some specialty stitches as well.

So stay-tuned for copies to go on sale soon as Mr. Darcy helps me get my office in gear to print and manage mailing and such.

There are rich golds, greens, blues, reds, pinks and lavender shades. I can't wait to start the model stitching.

Speaking of Abbie......................

here she is. Herself. Watching me take pics of my knitting and designing this morning.

She is simply the sweetest lover of all computers that generate heat from a fan and lover of all things pork, i.e bacon.

(she also is begging with her eyes for some cheese and crackers I'm snacking on)

 

 

In the knitting chair, I had to frog ALL of the Mixed Berries scarf I'm making for a friend I work with and start all over. I simply had to.

 

The green is really a 3/4 hank I had leftover from something else and I started out making a Kindle cover with wooden buttons to close; however I cast on WAY to many stitches for that and will simply make a carrying back for my cross stitching stash. I will still use the wooden buttons.

 

I am still planning on making a Kindle cover but in another color in the future.

 

So much stitching and so many hours in a day..................

 

 

I'm still practicing the garter stitch and haven't ventured into new things but I have watched many U-tube videos and learned several things.

 

Well, off to get the house in order and plan what we are having for supper tonight.

 

Remember that song back in the 80's Things that Make You Go Hmmmmmmmm???? :p

 

That's what supper tonight is doing for me right now.

Spaghetti, however, is really sounding like a simple make and tonight I need simple.

 

I did see a new recipe which is simple for Cheese biscuits that I might try. I think Mr. Darcy would love those.

Enjoy this sampler I designed this morning with inspiration of memories of my friend Diane who was unfortunately taken with breast cancer years ago.

She was my friend, my mentor in my career and will always live in my heart both personally and professionally.

All it took was a little sunshine after 4 days of clouds and rain, a long chat with an old friend, a visit to a primitive shop to smell the Fall candles, and news that much cooler, dry weather will be here this weekend.

 

Besides a big front porch, I love a house with a fireplace.

I'm so ready for sweater weather and walking outside to the aroma of oak wood in the fireplace.

 

I thought I would share my thoughts with you if you need a small to hang in your home in a special spot or on the mantle to show your love for home.
