A Special Day of Thanks

How Great Thou Art

designed by Feathers in the Nest
copyright 2012

This is a reposting of special, heart-to-heart design I made last year. I have even the special order Sage Green, wide trim frame when finishing. Soon things will slow down and I can stitch models, in hopes XXX fingers!!!!

I thought I would repost again for all those that love this hymn.

I will share some of the research on this great song with you:

~it was the favorite gospel song of 3 of the US presidents

~has been performed in Broadway in New York in productions

~Lawrence Welk had stated this was the most requested song he ever had on his TV series

~it has received 2 Grammy awards

~the first major recording of the son was by Bill Carle

~in the 70's it was presented, it won an award for 1 million performances on TV and radio

~Billy Graham used this song many times in his TV broadcasts

~the song lyrics were first written as a poem in 1886

~the poem was translated into "O Great God" in English

~the first 3 verses were inspired in the Carpathian mountains

In the early 1920’s, English missionaries, Mr. Stuart K. Hine and his wife, ministered in Poland. It was there they learned the Russian version of Boberg’s poem, “O Store Gud”, coupled with the original Swedish melody. Later, under inspiration, Stuart K. Hine wrote original English words, and made his own arrangement of the Swedish melody, which became popular and is now known as the hymn, HOW GREAT THOU ART.

The first three verses were inspired, line upon line, amidst unforgettable experiences in the Carpathian Mountains. In a village to which he had climbed, Mr. Hine stood in the street singing a Gospel hymn and reading aloud “John, Chapter Three”. Among the sympathetic listeners was a local village schoolmaster. A storm was gathering, and when it was evident that no further travel could be made that night, the friendly schoolmaster offered his hospitality. Awe-inspiring was the mighty thunder echoing through the mountains, and it was this impression that was to bring about the birth of the first verse.

Pushing on, Mr. Hine crossed the mountain frontier into Romania and into Bukovina. Together with some young people, through the woods and forest glades he wandered, and heard the birds sing sweetly in the trees. Thus, the second verse came into being.

Verse three was inspired through the conversion of many of the Carpathian mountain-dwellers. The fourth Verse did not come about until Mr. Hine’s return to Britain.

Stuart K. Hine was born in 1899 in England. His parents were at that time worshipping with the Salvation Army, and dedicated him to God during a time when opposition was strong against those who proclaimed Christ.

After serving in the Armed Forces, Mr. Hine was called to the mission field. For many years he served in Poland and Czechoslovakia. It was during missionary work in these countries that Mr. Hine composed many of the songs for which he’s well-known today.

Stuart K. Hine died in 1989.

This song has always meant alot to me. If you would like to stitch this, I think Thanksgiving is the perfect time as we all have blessings bestowed among us and to thank first our Creator, is an honor.

I hope this day is special for you and that you find happiness among those you love as you get ready for the holidays.

Till later,
Jennifer

Feathers in the Nest publishes next volumes from Cutest Blog on the Block Books

I have to say that the idea to publish your blog/ your interests, pictures, memories, stitching progress, and all the things you write about is a brilliant one!  I started doing this about 2 years ago through The Cutest Blog on the Block website. I have a few gaps in time. The comments are left out as the default. My first book, I did publish everything but they do charge by the page, so eliminating comment pages just shows your post writings.

The volumes to my writing are kept in my home office together on my desk. Yes, you can store it on the computer but I am keeping a written copy for personal use. If you have a family that cares about your life, it is a great way to keep memories alive to the next generation, or if not, donate to a charity or a home.

SO, with that being said, got another volume which covers Jan1-July1, 2011. You can choose what you want for the front and back. It's just so cool to add to your personal library.

Here are a few pics of this volume.

my own design of the Royal Wedding on the front.

The back has a picture of an antique sampler find I have hanging in our home. A very sweet stitching phrase.

a great way to remember your trips.

special samplers and designs

Stash shopping and stitching progress

And even Abbie sneaks in every now and again. ;)

dedication page which differs with each volume

Each one I publish is about 200 pages, so this was right on target. I need to go back and fill in some publishing gaps in time. This is the third volume I've published so far. Of course, this is for personal use only, no to sell. I took advantage of a 15% off sale they were having a couple of weeks ago.

The beginning has a directory page for the topics you write about

And of course the pages are glossy and thick. Very good quality.
You can option to order it in hardback form but I always got softcover.
You have several options for the color of your book. The two previous ones were in antique brown.
This one I chose blue because I knew I wanted to put this sampler on the front.

So, this morning, adding another volume to the office as I dust.

For more information on how you can turn your blog into a personal book click

A pic of Abigail this morning. She is just about to nod off for a nap. She is not happy that the laundry basket is empty in the closet. But I am! : P

Until later, make memories!

Dinner and quilts at Unicoi Lodge

Tonight, Body Guard and I went to Unicoi State Park Lodge to eat dinner supper. The buffet was so fresh and abundant. They always have fresh trout and vegetables and a dessert table that is quite huge.
It was raining very heavy until after dinner and then the sun came out with the mountains steaming as we strolled along the grounds and the woods.

We met some nice folks while I took pictures outside and looked at the beautiful flowers.

Unicoi's dining room has always had many quilts exhibited and, well, as you can see in the pictures, the prices are quite pricey for a souvenier for travelers. We are locals and have seen them before but I got my camera and started snapping pics after we ate our good-eats.

He waits patiently always while I'm on an adventure.
See the smile.

After the price though.......

And so the camera starting snapping.

What a name for a pattern!

In the meantime, he's analyzing people.

This is one of my favorites....nope, can't get any of these quilts...evah. The prices are quite high. LOL

This Oak Leaf pattern one is my second most favorite.

Then, the next level at the bottom past the other side of the BIG fireplace has several other quilts.

Although I had enough dessert to hang from the rafters, I didn't for these pics :)

Hold on, let me just bend way over and grab on to the lights and get this close-up!

Walking down to the second floor and then out where the rain finally stopped and within a few minutes the sun struggled to beam through the clouds.

The Lantana is abundant here.

Not a drop of rain wasted......

AHHH,  sun!

We stroll through the grounds.

I did not once hear the word S_N_A_K_E, thank goodness, on this walk.

This is the swing where we sit and talk about things like "remember when......"

I can only say it was a steamy Sunday evening.
