Abbie's Dog Biscuits---Recipe for YUM (for dogs that is)

Because Abigail doesn't think she is a dog (shhhhhhhh), I have to whisper this to you.

{{{in a whispering voice}}}

Ok, here goes..........with doggie treats of all kinds being made from China and causing health issues all over.......and NOT being pulled from the shelves..........

I've been wanting to make Abbie some dog biscuits. It made WAY more than she can eat but hopefully they will stay well in the airtight container.
She smelled them cooking and stood by the stove the whole time and actually growled at me when I gave her the first one in her really, light, prissy girlie growl........so these are Abbie-approved.

We ventured out to make homemade dog biscuits this evening!

I had a basic recipe but didn't measure a thing, and got the general idea of what's in these treats and put the following together:

1 can of chicken broth
2 eggs
4-5 tablespoons of veg oil

Mix all together with mixer on high speed and set aside

Then preheat oven to 350 degrees

Take a huge mixing bowl and put about 2 cups of leftover dry cereal from the pantry which included a mix of honey and oats cereal, and chex mix cereal
+
about 1-2 cups of all purpose flour
+
1/2-1 cup of self-rising flour
+
1 cup or so of corn meal

Then crumble all the cereal into the flour by hand and crunch it well.

Add the liquid mix to it and mix with the mixer until cookie dough type develops

Put a light coating of flour on a cutting board.

Flour your hands lightly

Take a big ball of dough and knead and roll out with rolling pin like biscuits.

Roll to 1/4 -1/2 inch thick and use doggie treat cutters (or cookie cutters)
to cut out the biscuits.

Place on a prepared baking sheet of parchment paper.

Save some chicken broth to baste over the top of them.

Makes about 5 dozen dog biscuits.

Cook at 350 for about 25 minutes.
Some things I would change or alternate would be use bacon grease instead of vegetable oil and also add a bit of cheese to them.

Then let them cool on a plate.

Some of them still have excess flour you can shake off.

They are dry but have the chicken broth smell to them and Abbie ate 2 of them. She hid another because she was so full. :)

After they are fully cooled off, I placed in an airtight sealed container, which was actually a plastic gallon picture with top and handle. They really are very firm and she liked them ALOT.

Making them reminds me of cheese straws at Christmas time. :)

The gallon picture with a seal made the perfect treat dispenser for her.

Then with the excess dough we made shapes for fun.

It got kinda messy in the kitchen. :P

 Seriously.

Flour everywhere.

Well it was certainly an experience.......I can't wait to make some more around the holidays for her and this time will add some cheese and bacon bits.

From the flour-filled kitchen on Walton's mountain,

Jennifer

  8. P.S. Maybe you could put the extras in the freezer so they'd last longer?
